I know, I know. This chart is incredibly crude. It looks like it was drawn on the back of a napkin in about thirty seconds.
But sometimes the simplest drawings capture the complex truths we’re all feeling.
And what I’m feeling right now—and what my conversation feeds are confirming—is that we are stuck in a massive paradox. We have access to the most powerful content creation tools in human history, yet it feels like the overall quality of what we are consuming is nosediving.
Let’s break down this crude illustration of our current reality.
A Tale of Two Lines
The chart shows two forces acting in opposition, and a goal we haven’t reached yet.
1. The Blue Line: Evolution of AI. This is an upward-climbing rocket. AI capability isn’t just growing; it’s accelerating. It has lowered the barrier to entry for content creation to absolute zero. Everyone is now an editor, a writer, an illustrator.
2. The Pink Line: Content Quality (Human Output). This is the counterintuitive part. You’d think that with better tools, our output would get better. But the chart shows it crashing. Why? Because when creation becomes effortless, thoughtfulness often disappears. We are confusing flawless grammar with good writing.
We are currently sitting right at that big pink intersection point: The “Not a Sweet Spot.”
This is the Sea of Sameness. This is where everyone uses the same prompts, the same generic models, and the same sanitized tone to say nothing very efficiently.
The Meta-Problem (Yes, Even This Post)
Here is where the irony gets painful.
I see this same common pattern everywhere on professional platforms. Someone makes a generic chart (like mine!) and writes a status that says:
“Most people will fail with AI because they don’t know the proper frameworks. Here is how you actually do it…”
Then you read the post, and it feels exactly like the AI-generated advice it’s critiquing. It’s “perfect” but entirely hollow.
I want to be transparent here: Even the drafting of this blog post involved an AI sounding board. I used it to sharpen the wording and structure the arguments. The irony isn’t lost on me.
But the frustration? The observation? The initial messy realization captured in that crude drawing? That’s all human. And that brings us to the missing element.
The Dotted Line (The Real Goal)
The current intersection (The “Not a Sweet Spot”) is a trap. The blue line (AI Evolution) will just keep going up, potentially taking us into an even bland-er future.
We must break away from the main pink line and follow the Dotted Line toward the Goal.
This dotted line represents Taste. It represents the “little human” status that makes us actually want to read something.
AI excels at the predictable. Humans excel at the unpredictable. The goal isn’t to reject the tools; it’s to stop letting the tools do the thinking for us.
To follow that dotted line, we must use the massive efficiency AI gives us to reclaim time for the things it cannot generate:
- Lived experiences
- Nuanced, messy opinions
- Genuine empathy
AI should be our foundational baseline, not our ceiling. It can build the house, but only we can decide how to decorate it so it feels like a home.
If we don’t find a way to make our content taste like it was made by a person, the pink line will continue to crash, and we’ll all just be efficient distributors of boredom.
